Why can't I copy large files over 4GB to my USB flash drive 'Have you ever failed to copy the file larger than 4GB to the external USB drive? Recently I encountered such a problem.
I purchased a 32 GB USB flash drive, plugged it into my computer, and started copying some files which I wanted to transfer to another computer onto it. The little files (MP3s, documents, etc.) all transferred fine. But when I tried to copy some DVD ISO files, I got the error “The file ‘DVDBACKUP1’ is too large for the destination file system.” and then the transfer failed. I don’t know why it happened? Anyone knows how to copy large files to USB flash drive?' Like the above case, if you experience the same can't copy large files to USB drive or memory card problem with 'The file is too large for the destination file system' error message, it usually because that your files are larger than 4GB but your flash drive or memory card is formatted with the FAT32 file system which can only handle files up to 4GB in size.
So, you can not copy files larger than 4GB files to the FAT32 USB drive, memory card or other external storage devices with this file system even there is enough free space. Then how can you solve the problem and successfully transfer large files to FAT32 USB? You just need to. The latter does not have the 4GB file size limitation, so you can successfully copy the file larger than 4GB to USB drive after the file system converting job. How to convert FAT32 to NTFS without formatting The most common way to convert the file system of a USB drive or SD card from FAT32 to NTFS is to format USB drive to NTFS with Windows Disk Management tool. But it requires you to delete all the data on the drive, so we don’t think it is the best way. Then how to convert FAT32 to NTFS without formatting?
We recommend you to try EaseUS. It allows you to do this job with simple steps.
Here is the detailed guide.
I'm not sure where to post this question but I am wondering if anyone knows of a graphical interface tool that can change the sort order on a USB flash drive formatted in FAT32. I need to be able to do this on the Mac and not a Windows computer. I have found a couple of tools but they require a lot of terminal commands and I don't quite understand the instructions. I have a 128GB USB flash drive that I have to format in FAT32 for it to work with my new car. I have put folders of artists and albums with MP3's on the flash drive and when I plug it into the car, it shows be the list of these folders in the order they were added. I would like to change that sort order so that I can view them in alphabetical order which would make more sense since I will probably be adding and deleting folders from it on occasion since my entire library does not fit on 128GB.
There is no way to do it in the car. I downloaded NewFAT32Sorter and installed Java and was able to open it but I'm not quite sure how to use it. It has a button to choose a source directory and a target directory but when I click those I don't have the option to choose my mounted FAT32 flash drive.
The documentation doesn't say much either. I just figured it out. Had to choose my computer and then open the 'Volumes' folder and could see my flash drive. It is doing it now and I will know if it worked tomorrow morning when I drive to work. So this did not work. Unless I am not doing it correctly. It seemed to have done something when I ran it but when I plugged the drive into my car, it was all the same.
In a very random order. Although, by what I can see is this puts files in order. Maybe it doesn't do folders?
There is a place to enter the file extensions of the files you want it to put in order. If you leave it blank, as I did, then it does all files in the directory. However, it isn't files that I was having a problem with, those seem to be in order once I open a folder. It is the actual folders that are not in order. I have basically dragged artist folders from my itunes library onto this drive so it is organized by artists and then in each artist folder there is a folder for each album.
For some reason, these are all in a very random order and not in alphabetical order. Yes, and everyone mentions using a FAT32 sorter and they give links for ones that are for Windows computers. I am on a Mac so that doesn't help.
And all the Mac ones that I found on my own require running terminal and the instructions are a little confusing to me so I don't dare do that. What is really strange is some people mention copying the folders in the order you want them to appear. Because it does it by default in chronological order in the way the files are added. However, it is a USB 2 device that is 128GB which would take a whole day to remove everything and copy it back in the order I want and then that means I can never change things like if I get a new album that I want to add to it. Also, what is strange is I don't believe that mine are showing in chronological order either. It seems very random.
A couple of albums/artists that I added yesterday to it are in the middle of the list when I look at it on my car. If they were added last, wouldn't they be at the top or bottom to be in chronological order? It really makes it hard to find an album or artist with a couple hundred artists on the drive if they are not in alphabetical order. So I think may have solved my issue with the suggestion of NewFAT32Sorter. I won't know for sure until I test it again tonight and tomorrow. Last night I took a different Flash Drive and dragged a bunch of compilation CD's to it that were in folders.
I ran the NewFAT32Sorter on that drive and when I did, noticed that 'TEST' was checked which means it was in test mode and probably not actually doing anything. I unchecked that and ran it on the new drive and today when I used the new drive in my car everything seemed to be in alpha order. I am going to try it on my larger 128 GB flash drive that has everything out of order again tonight and then test it in my car tomorrow. I am hopeful that it will work and if so I will mark this as solved. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
